Why Do Puppies Have Eyebrows?

Puppies don’t “really” have eyebrows. Instead, they have ridges above their eyes that closely resemble typical human eyebrows. Sometimes, people mistake these ridges for eyebrows, and then they wonder why a dog would possibly need eyebrows at all!

Well, these ridges, which look a lot like eyebrows, actually do serve a purpose, because puppies use them to communicate their emotions. For example, just like people do, puppies may raise their “eyebrows” to express curiosity. It’s quite fascinating how some canine behaviour mimics the human variety, and you may really enjoy watching your beloved puppy pal “make faces” using his eyes and his little ridges.

Ridges May be Dark or Light

The reason why many people believe that dogs have eyebrows is because some of these canine above-the-eye ridges are really quite dark. In fact, from a distance, these dark ridges may look like thick, pronounced and bushy eyebrows.

Breeds with darker ridges include Labrador Retrievers, Rottweilers, Bernese Mountain Dogs, German Shepherds, and Doberman Pinschers. Other puppies may simply have ridges that match the color of their coats precisely.

If your puppy has dark ridges, it’s perfectly normal, and it’s not something that you should ever worry about.
