Why Puppies Make a Good Gift vs Bad Gift

Never assume anything when it comes to giving a puppy as a gift!

Doing so can be one of the worst decisions you will ever make and it can lead to a very unhappy life for the puppy that doesn’t deserve the fate of an unloving family.

Dog ownership is a long-term affair that lasts for years. It is not fair to saddle an unsuspecting person with the responsibilities of dog rearing. However, if that person wants a puppy, your gift could be the best he or she ever receives.

If you are thinking about getting a puppy for someone else, ask yourself if you are absolutely sure that he or she wants the responsibility of raising a dog. The best thing is to openly discuss the idea of a new puppy with the potential owner. If they say “no,” then no it is. Don’t put them in a position where they feel like they have to take the puppy.

Dogs’ personalities vary, as do the personalities of humans. It is always best for a potential owner to choose his or her own puppy. That is the first step in the bonding process between man and his best friend.

Sometimes choosing your own puppy is not possible. In that case, make sure you are clear about what the person expects out of a dog if you are the one that is selecting the puppy. Don’t get someone that lives in a small apartment a working dog that needs lots of exercise. Neither will be happy in the end.

Puppies are a big financial responsibility. There is food to buy. There are vaccinations to pay for. Toys, beds, flea and tick control and unexpected illnesses can add up to a substantial amount of money. That’s why it is best not to give a puppy to someone without his or her prior approval. Are you sure the person can afford the financial burden that a puppy can be?

If you address these issues and decide to go ahead with giving a puppy as a gift, be prepared to take the puppy back if things do not work out between the new owner and dog. It then becomes your responsibility to give or find the dog a loving home.

If you give a puppy as a gift, be sure to send the necessities along with the dog. Provide dishes, food, snacks and grooming tools too.

While in many cases giving a puppy as a gift may not be the best idea, there are times when it works out well for the donor, owner and dog. If a person really wants a puppy, your gift can provide years of companionship and happiness for both the owner and the dog.

The key to whether or not your gift of a puppy will be a success depends on the parties involved. Weigh all aspects of the situation before making the decision. Don’t let those big brown puppy eyes lead you to a bad decision. Take time to think it through! The puppy’s happiness depends on you.
